Methods to Check Vehicle Ownership in Kerala

Using the VAHAN Portal (Online)

VAHAN is the name of the national vehicle register created by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). All information about cars registered in India, including Kerala, is available on the VAHAN portal.

Steps to check vehicle ownership through VAHAN:

  • Visit the VAHAN website: Visit https://vahan.parivahan.gov.in to access the official VAHAN portal.
  • Open the “Know Your Vehicle Details” page: Locate and click on the “Know Your Vehicle Details” link on the homepage. It will direct you to the page to search for vehicle-related information.
  • Enter Vehicle Registration Number: Enter the vehicle’s registration number in the appropriate format. Additionally, you must enter a security Captcha.
  • Submit the Request: Click the “Search Vehicle” button after entering the information.
  • View Vehicle Ownership Details: The information that follows on the portal:

Number assigned to the vehicle registration

  1. Name of the owner
  2. Vehicle class (two-, four-wheeler, etc.)
  3. Vehicle make and model
  4. Type of fuel
  5. Date of registration
  6. Validity of Registration
  7. Date of expiration for fitness certificate
  8. Status of the Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate

Through SMS Service (Offline Method)

The Government of India offers an SMS-based tool to verify vehicle ownership details for those who do not have an internet connection. This approach is easy to implement and works with any mobile device that can send SMS messages.  

Steps to check vehicle ownership through SMS:

  • Open your SMS application: Use the default messaging app on your phone.
  • Type the SMS in this format: VAHAN KL01AB1234, for example, is a vehicle registration number.
  • Send the SMS to 7738299899.
  • Receive the Vehicle Details: You will get an SMS reply with the following information in a matter of seconds:
  • Name of the owner
  • Date of registration
  • Vehicle make and model
  • Type of fuel

Steps to check vehicle ownership through RTO:

  • Locate the nearest RTO: Track down the RTO office that handles the vehicle’s registration. Go to the Kerala MVD website to obtain an online list of RTOs.
  • Make a formal request in writing: It could be necessary for you to submit a written application indicating your requirement for the ownership data of the car.
  • Provide necessary identification: If you’re requesting information as a third party or for legal reasons, some RTOs may ask for identification to authenticate your request.
  • Pay any applicable fees: A small price may apply to view car details or to get a certified copy of the ownership record.
